We’re here to help you better understand the options available to you, creating a roof option that perfectly suits your needs so you can stay more comfortable in your outdoor space.

How a Motorized Pergola Works

Your louvered roof will come with blades that can rotate within a fixed frame. It will have a motor that’s connected to your home’s electricity, and the blades will rotate in unison so you have complete control over how much (or how little) sunshine comes through. You can opt to use your motorized pergola in the following four ways:

  • Full sun: When your roof is completely open, you’ll enjoy full sunlight and ventilation
  • Indirect sun: Block out some of the sun, enjoying indirect lighting and ventilation
  • Directional sun: Direct the morning sun so you stay comfortable no matter the time of year
  • Closed: Keep the sun out by closing your roof

When your motorized pergola is closed, the blades create a waterproof seal, keeping the rain out on a gloomy day. You can operate your roof with a remote or even connect it to your smartphone for extra convenience.

Franks Facts: Why We Proudly Install StruXure

At Sun Solutions, we don't just install outdoor shade systems - we build premium outdoor experiences. When our customers ask why we recommend StruXure motorized louvered pergolas over any other system on the market, we give them the unfiltered truth.

Here are the Frank Facts about the gold standard of outdoor living:

The Only ICC-Certified System in the World. The Fact: StruXure is the only motorized louvered pergola company globally to earn a full International Code Council (ICC) certification. Why It Matters: This isn't a self-proclaimed title. Independent engineers tested the entire unified system - the louvers, beams, posts, and connections. It is structurally proven to withstand hurricane-force winds up to 150 mph.

FAQs About Motorized Pergola

Pricing depends on four things: the size and span of the structure, whether it is attached to your home or freestanding, the louver system you select, and the accessories you integrate — lighting, fans, heaters, screens and sensors. A compact attached pergola over an existing patio compared to an estate-scale multi-bay structure with full automation are widely different projects with very different budgets, which is why we quote from a design rather than from a price list. In either case, you will be receiving a permanent ICC-Certified, StruXure engineered aluminum structure, priced accordingly and we will give you a firm number after a design consultation. You can read about general planning estimates on our blog “How Much Does an Outdoor Living Space Cost in Alabama.” Financing and payment options are available through Hearth Financing .
Yes — when the louvers are closed, the patented interlocking louver design forms a watertight seal, and rainwater is pitched into a 360-degree gutter system integrated into the frame itself rather than bolted on afterward. StruXure's pass-through gutter technology routes that water down inside the posts and away from your slab, so you are not standing under a drip line. You can sit out through a rainstorm with the roof closed and your furniture stays dry. Optional X Guard micromesh gutter protection keeps the channels clear without seasonal cleaning.
StruXure's Pivot 6 louvers have been tested to endure wind speeds up to 150 mph in the fully open position and carry the only ICC certification for motorized louvers in the industry, with systems engineered to meet Florida's hurricane codes. An optional wind sensor is the second layer of protection: at a preset threshold, typically 60 mph or higher, it automatically opens the louvers so air passes through the system instead of pushing against it, relieving uplift — and it overrides every other command until the weather passes. Your specific structure is engineered to your site's exposure and local code requirements.
Yes. ICC-certified StruXure systems are rated for snow loads between 20 and 70 pounds per square foot depending on elevation, location and local code — a range that covers Alabama's requirements with margin to spare. Optional snow and ice sensors open the louvers automatically so accumulation passes through the system rather than resting on it, and the integrated gutter manages snowmelt to reduce ice buildup. Because the structure is extruded aluminum, freeze-thaw cycles do not cause the warping, rot or cracking that shortens the life of a wood pergola.
You can operate and control the motorized pergola from a mobile app, a damp-rated handheld remote with a saved favorite position, a wireless wall switch, or by voice through Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. With StruXure's Bond-powered operating system, the louvers, lighting, fans and heaters all run through one interface, so you can build scenes — an afternoon shade setting, an evening entertaining setting — and change the entire environment with a single command instead of chasing four remotes. Somfy RTS motor technology runs underneath, with weather-resistant motors and electronics built for continuous outdoor duty.
Yes — StruXure systems run on standard smart-home platforms including Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant rather than a closed proprietary remote, so the pergola joins the automation you already own instead of sitting beside it. If you are running a particular ecosystem or hub, bring it up during the design consultation rather than after installation: control device placement, network coverage at the structure and sensor locations are all easier to get right on the drawing than in the field.
The timeline breaks into four stages: design consultation and finalized drawings, permitting and any HOA approval, manufacturing lead time for your configuration and finish, then installation on site. Typically, 14 weeks. Note: custom paint-to-sample finishes and large multi-zone configurations extended manufacturing time. Installation itself is the shortest stage; approvals and lead time drive the calendar, which is why homeowners planning around a specific event or a spring season should start well ahead of it.
Yes. A substantial share of our estate-scale work comes through architects, landscape designers and custom builders, and we are set up to work from their drawings and specifications rather than around them. We can engineer the structure to an exact pitch, angle and roof geometry — including true gabled configurations — and match any exterior with paint-to-sample finishing in thousands of colors and woodgrain options, so the pergola reads as original architecture rather than an addition. If you are a homeowner working with a designer, we are comfortable making them the primary point of contact and keeping you out of the detail.
Very little. Powder-coated extruded aluminum does not need sealing, staining or fabric replacement, there is no rot or insect exposure, and routine care amounts to rinsing the louvers and keeping the gutters clear — which the optional X Guard micromesh system largely handles for you.
